Lake Taneycomo is the odd lake out: river-narrow, fed by cold water from the bottom of Table Rock Lake through the dam's power plant, and stocked with trout by the Shepherd of the Hills hatchery — which supplies most of Missouri's stocked trout. It fishes like a river and hosts one of America's famous trout waters.
The orientation
FindUsHere's narrated lap traces the whole lake: the hatchery-fed headwaters below the dam, Fall Creek, the Lakeside Forest overlook, and down to Forsyth and Rockaway Beach. Float trips run when the dam is generating; fishing is easiest when it isn't.
The trout
Two films fish the famous water. In the trophy area, the slot rules protect mid-size rainbows (12–20 inches go back) and browns over 20 — fished here with a caddis dry and midge dropper, ending in a personal-best rainbow. Ozark Outlaws drifts the seam where slow water meets fast and fights a ten-minute rainbow, the biggest of the host's life. An Explore Branson guide short adds the secrets: the wild upper three miles, bald eagles, state-record browns — and the number-one beginner mistake, not fishing deep enough.
The twist
The lower lake also holds largemouth bass. One film works the overhanging trees with topwater frogs — the chunky bass most Taneycomo visitors never target.
