Austin with Kids — Family Guide
Austin is more kid-friendly than its “live music capital” reputation suggests. The swimming holes are magical, the bats are mesmerizing, and the outdoor activities rival any family destination in the South.
Can’t-Miss Experiences
Congress Avenue Bats (March-October) — 1.5 million bats emerging from under a bridge at sunset. Kids stand on the bridge, watch the sky fill with bats, and talk about it for years. Free. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset for a good spot.
Barton Springs Pool — A 3-acre spring-fed swimming pool with 68°F water year-round. Kids can swim in crystal-clear spring water while parents lounge on the grassy banks. $5-9 admission for adults.
Zilker Park — Austin’s central park. Playgrounds, the Zilker Zephyr train (a miniature train ride around the park), and access to Barton Springs and the hike-and-bike trail.
Museums & Indoor
Thinkery (Mueller neighborhood) — Austin’s children’s museum. Interactive exhibits for ages 0-11, including a water play area, a maker space, and a kitchen lab. Excellent for rainy days or when it’s too hot to be outside.
Bullock Texas State History Museum (downtown) — Texas history with interactive exhibits and an IMAX theater. The “Story of Texas” permanent exhibit is engaging for school-age kids.
Austin Nature & Science Center (Zilker Park) — Free! Small nature center with native animal exhibits, fossil dig pit, and nature trails. Perfect for younger kids.
Outdoor Adventures
Hamilton Pool Preserve (45 min west) — A collapsed grotto with a 50-foot waterfall. Older kids are mesmerized by the jade-green swimming hole. Reservations required.
Dinosaur Tracks at Dinosaur Valley State Park (2 hours south) — Actual dinosaur footprints in the Paluxy River bed. Kids can wade in the river and stand in 113-million-year-old tracks. Mind-blowing.
Inner Space Cavern (45 min north, Georgetown) — Cave tours with formations, fossils, and the thrill of going underground. Kid-friendly paved trail option plus an adventure tour for older kids.
Food Kids Love
Amy’s Ice Creams (multiple locations) — Austin’s legendary ice cream with mix-ins smashed on a frozen slab. Mexican vanilla is the signature flavor.
Torchy’s Tacos — Kids love the quesadillas and the chips with queso.
Zilker Café — Casual eats near Zilker Park. Good stopping point between swimming and exploring.
