Austin Nightlife — Best Bars, Live Music & Things To Do After Dark

Austin’s nightlife sprawls across multiple neighborhoods, each with a distinct vibe. 6th Street is the starting point, but Rainey Street, East Austin, and South Congress are where Austin actually hangs out. Live music is everywhere — venues range from packed honky-tonks to intimate dive bars to massive outdoor amphitheaters.

Best Live Music Venues

Continental Club (South Congress) — The institution. Live music every night — blues, funk, country, R&B. Packed on weekends. No cover charge during the day; evening shows typically $8-15. The back patio is legendary.

Mohawk (Red River Cultural District) — Outdoor venue with a killer balcony. Indie, punk, hip-hop, and electronic. Great sound system. Cover charges vary; expect $10-20 for touring acts. The balcony is first-come, first-served and gets rowdy.

Stubb’s Bar-B-Q (Red River) — Outdoor amphitheater with capacity for 2,000+. National touring acts play here. BBQ inside, full bar, and the outdoor venue is one of the best concert experiences in Austin. Tickets vary; big-name acts run $30-80+.

The Broken Spoke (South Lamar) — The best honky-tonk in Austin. Live country music, no attitude, strong drinks. Locals only vibe — but locals don’t mind visitors who respect the space. No cover charge. Budget $4-6 per drink.

Bacchanal Wine (Rainey Street) — Live music in a converted Victorian house. The outdoor beer garden is the draw. Bands play most nights; no cover charge. Low-key, genuine Austin energy.

Best Bars by Type

Rainey Street Crawl

Lustre Pearl (Rainey Street) — Converted Victorian with a massive outdoor deck, beer garden, and outdoor stage. Live music, casual vibe, and one of the best places to meet people in Austin. No cover.

Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden (Rainey Street) — 100+ beers on tap, excellent sausages, outdoor seating under trees. The beer selection is serious and the food is real. This is Austin.

The Roosevelt (Rainey Street) — Upscale lounge in a Victorian house. Craft cocktails, quieter vibe, good for actual conversation.

South Congress & Elsewhere

Midnight Cowboy (6th Street) — Hidden speakeasy behind an unmarked door on 6th Street. Reservation required (call ahead). Limited capacity, craft cocktails, and zero fluff. This is a real old-school cocktail bar.

The White Horse (East 5th) — Honky-tonk with a live country band every night. Two-step dancers, cold beer, and a legitimate local crowd. Cover charge varies; typically $10-15 for touring bands.

Lazarus Brewing (East 5th) — Craft brewery with a rooftop and food trucks. The beer is excellent, the crowd is mixed, and there’s a neighborhood vibe despite being walkable from downtown.

Dive Bars & Neighborhood Spots

Barracuda (East 6th) — Punk rock dive bar. Pool tables, cheap beer, and the jukebox is excellent. Locals only vibe, but tourists are welcome if they respect the space.

The Hole in the Wall (6th Street) — Beloved hole-in-the-wall with live music and a devoted following. Small, standing-room only, and the energy is authentic Austin.

Cheer Up Charlies (Red River) — Austin’s best LGBTQ+ bar. DJ nights, spacious patio, and a welcoming vibe. No cover charge most nights.

Best for Groups

Rainey Street — 15+ bars in converted Victorian houses over 3 blocks. Each bar is different; groups can split up and reconvene. Beer gardens are group-friendly. This is the best bar crawl in Austin.

6th Street Walking Tour — Start at Shakespeare’s Pub, hit Maggie Mae’s, move to The Blind Pig, and end at Midnight Cowboy. Free live music pours out of every door. Car-free on weekend nights. Groups of 4-10 flow naturally through the strip.

Bacchanal Wine — Large outdoor space, live music, multiple bars, and low-key atmosphere. No cover charge. Groups of 8-15 fit without feeling crowded.
